Vertical Urban Theory

Population increase is leading to dramatic urbanisation, with an estimated 70 percent of people living in cities by 2050. Migration from the countryside to urban areas is a phenomenon that is putting pressure on many cities, where existing urban and architectural models struggle to accommodate the increased population or provide open/green spaces for recreation. Our research explores a vertical urban theory that facilitates development in a sustainably inclusive manner. We investigate detailed planning principles that allow for greener, appropriately orientated social spaces, that are climatically responsive; more integrated with circulation patterns that permit an ease of movement, and activated by communal and economic uses to encourage greater social interaction within developments.
